In 1687, Barcelona suffered a terrible plague of locusts, which did not cease until the city dedicated its prayers to the Virgin of Mercy. To celebrate this miraculous event, the Virgin was declared patron of the city.
This is the legendary origin of the current City Festival, held every year around the 24th September, which is Mercy Day (La Mercè). During the days of the celebrations (this year, from the 22nd to the 25th) Barcelona brings the best of itself out onto the streets: its public associations, its roots, its music, etc.
This is gonna kick ass...its what I was trying to get all you guys to come over here for.......but I will have fun anyway! I am really looking forward to seeing the castellars again and being chased by a fire breathing dragon through the streets of the city...wonder how flame retardant my clothers are...
